SCOTLAND - info, culture and history

When visiting Florida, and sampling the many, varied restaurants and fast food diners in Florida, it's best to put that diet on hold for a while as the portions served are enormous and very inexpensive. Kissimmee and Orlando are both packed with restaurants and fast food outlets to suit every taste, whether it be traditional American fare, seafood, steak, chicken, all you can eat buffets, pizzas, fresh salad, or why not try one of the many diners offering a more 'international' flavour. Choose from Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, Carribean and many more. Good restaurants in Orlando, Florida, quickly have all the tables filled for most of the night. Just take a drive along International Drive or Highway 192 around 5.30 p.m and you will see queues outside the door of the most popular restaurants in Orlando and Kissimmee.

For inexpensive, family dining I would have to recommend Ponderosa, Denny's Diner, Shoneys and Perkins. All the aforementioned restaurants in Orlando, Florida are 'kid fiendly' and I have always found their table staff to be extremely helpful. On one occasion while eating in Ponderosa, International Drive, a young couple took the table opposite us with their beautiful new born baby in tow. The proud parents fussed after their baby and chatted with diners close by, who commented on how lovely the baby was etc. After their meal they left the customary tip on the table and were about to leave the premises when a cry broke out from the helpful waitress 'hey guys, you forgot your baby!' Exit stage left for the mum, the new dad was left to come back, red faced for the baby.

Denny's Diner offers an All Day Breakfast, the Grand Slam, which is delicious. It took a while, though, as a Scot, to get used to pancakes smothered in maple syrup being on the same plate as my sausage, egg, bacon, hash browns and tomato. Once, when eating in Denny's I ordered a plate of Chilli Fries, which is chips smothered in chilli and covered with melted cheese, as my main course (entree) and decided, as Denny's pancakes are so good, to have pancakes as dessert. On placing my order, the waitress replied 'you want PANCAKES as a dessert? Gee you guys are so cute, no-one eats pancakes as a dessert'

Kobe Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar serves Angus steak, chicken and seafood which are all prepared at the side of your table. It is recommended that you make a seating reservation as this restaurant quickly fills up due to it's popularity. Kobe also have a Happy Hour and Early Bird Specials.

Seafood fans will love the Red Lobster, Boston Lobster and Crabby Bill's Restaurant. Crabby Bill's full menu can be viewed by clicking on the following link http://www.crabbybills.com/picts/SPBMENU.htm. Boston Lobster is well known in the area due to their tongue in cheek, advertising finesse. Their mascot, Larry the Lobster is a 12ft high ' clawed creature' who sits on top of a Volkswagon Beetle advertising the restaurant, and spends his time travelling the 'tourist haunts' frightening little kids.

Bennigan's Grill & Tavern is a chain of Irish themed restaurants offering traditional American fare

The Olive Garden serves Italian Food in a comfortable atmosphere. The menu offers a selection of soups, the fresh salad comes in a bowl with serving utensils, allowing diners to serve themselves. As expected of an Italian restaurant, Olive Garden has a large selection of pasta dishes, including, spaghetti  and meatballs, ravioli, lasagne and chicken parmesan. You can also expect an unlimited supply of the famous Olive Garden breadsticks with your meal.

Carrabbas Italian Restaurant located on Highway 192 uses only the finest ingredients available. A menu is available by clicking on the following link http://www.carrabbas.com/menu.asp Enter 34746 in the section requiring a zip code.

Golden Corral offers a huge buffet and grill selection, pasta pizza and carved meats for Sunday dinner.

VEGETARIAN / VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN ORLANDO

The Kissimmee and Orlando areas provide a good selection of vegetarian and vegan restaurants and fast food outlets. Some restaurants listed below are vegetarian in origin but do offer vegan meals if requested. Larger supermarkets, e.g. Walmart, also offer a large range of vegetarian and vegan foods which can be prepared in your villa, or cold snacks which can be eaten in a hotel room.

Garden Cafe, East Colonial Drive, Orlando, serves Chinese and International vegetarian and vegan cuisine. Choose from mock lamb, seafood, chicken and duck. The satay 'lamb' is made from fresh mushroom stalks and served with snap peas, celery and water chestnut, smothered in a rich sauce.

Grassroots Cafe, Orlando. Fast Food - serving vegan hot dogs with vegan toppings and vegan chili cheese nachos amongst others

Green Earth Health Foods, West Oakridge Plaza uses organic produce whenever possible. Homemade soups, salads and sandwiches.

Chamberlin's Market & Cafe, Dr. Phillips Blvd, Southwest Orlando. Homemade soups, salads, vegan lasagne, vegetarian chili, fresh fruit smoothies and a large salad bar

Dux, Peabody Hotel, International Drive. Dux is not pure vegetarian but caters well as they offer a three course vegetarian meal which changes regularly. Pure Vegans can order a three course meal with 24 hours notice.

As my daughter has been strictly vegan for many years due to health problems, I intend to add a link here in the near future to Vegan / Vegetarian recipes, so please check back on a regular basis if this is something that would be of interest.
