Free Things To Do In Florida
Everyone travelling to Florida will want to visit at least one Theme Park but sometimes either money does not allow for any more or the constant crowds and queues will dictate the vacation should be quieter than planned.
I have compiled a list of some places of intrest and attractions that are free or cost a token amount for families on a budget.
at Lake Jesup, Oveido County, demonstrates free live alligator shows each Sunday afternoon (so long as the weather permits) If you want to take a photo with your own camera they do charge $3 or if you prefer them to 'snap' the charge is $5. Website...
Kids and adults alike will love the March of the Peabody Ducks. Each and every day at 11.00am the 4 ducks and one drake are escorted from their luxurious $100,000 penthouse suite down to the lobby of the famous hotel. The ducks are led by a uniformed escort who has the aptly titled name of Duck Master. All the while the King Cotton March by Philip De Souza is playing while the ducks make their way across the marble floors and ascend three red carpeted steps into the grand marble fountain. The ducks happily splash in the fountain until 5.00pm when they are then led back to their special elevator which takes them back to their penthouse 'Duck Palace' Website...
Old town is a recreated, old American cowboy town which has free entrance and free car parking. Situated on Highway 192, you can browse speciality shops in Old Town or watch folk attempting the huge bungee jump, bars and fast food are also a feature as is a payable fun fair. Saturday is Classic Cars night but the cars are arriving steadily throughout the day and park up behind the main street to allow folk to view them and ask questions. The mustang's Corvettes etc begin their parade through the streets at 9.00pm.
Thursday night is Bike Night and Old Town is definately the place to be when the 700+ motorbikes are lined up on the streets. The noise as they all leave at night is amazing. Website...
Unlike the other parts of the Disney empire parking is free at Downtown Disney. The park is filled with restaurants, bars, shops, theatres and shows but still it makes an interesting afternoon out without spending any money. The largest Disney character store in the world is situated here plus the famous Cirque Du Soleil. Kids can take advantage of the Lego building stops and the playground. Take a picnic with you and spend the afternoon at the beautiful lake after browsing the stores and street performers and musicians. Website...
The Mercado, International Drive. The Mercado is a Mediterranean themed shopping mall which makes a pleasant few hours away from the hotel or villa even if shopping isn't your thing. Every evening after 7.00 a band performs for free in the central courtyard.
The Orlando Brewing Company near Downtown Orlando offers free tours, daily, around their organic brewery and free live entertainment each weekend. Website...
Celebration is a Disney manufactured town located just off Highway 192 in Kissimmee. It is worth a visit if only to check out the comparisons between the movie 'The Stepford Wives' This town is just a little too perfect and neat to be true, but then again it was Disney who came up with the idea. Rumour has it that anyone wanting to stay in Celebration must go through a vetting process. Children can play in the fountain or at the lakeside but be careful as there are alligators there. Christmas time in Celebration is typically Disney with snow being churned out from machines across the town
Although not free I felt that the Go Orlando Card was worth a mention as it is a cheap way of seeing the sites of Orlando and Kissimmee. Once purchased the card allows unlimited admission into as many of the stated attractions as you want to visit while your card is valid. You can even visit more than one attraction on any one day
