Currency / Travellers Cheques

It is probably wise to convert your currency into American dollars prior to arriving in Florida. I find it best to have a combination of U.S dollars and travellers cheques / checks. In shops, diners, gas stations etc. it is perfectly acceptable to use travellers cheques/checks as payment. Credit cards can also be used but best to make sure your provider doesn't charge a high rate for foreign transactions. It may also be prudent to inform your card provider, prior to travel, that you will be using your card in the U.S as my card was refused when I tried to use it, the reason being my card provider suspected some kind of fraud associated with the card being used to buy goods in the U.S.

When ordering travellers cheques be sure to ask for American dollar travellers cheques. Everywhere accepts them readily and you will receive your full change from the purchase in dollars. On receiving your travellers cheques you will be asked to sign them in front of the travel agent, bank clerk or bureau de change counter assistant, this may be a lengthy business if you have ordered a large amount of checks. Take a note of the serial numbers of each and every cheque and keep them separate from the actual cheques. This way, should you be unfortunate enough to lose the travellers cheques you will be able to have them replaced.  In Florida when using the cheques to pay for goods or services you will again have to countersign them in sight of the purveyor of the goods. You may also be asked for identification so best to keep your passport handy.
