Florida's Climate

The climate in Florida is sub tropical. If your vacation falls in the summer months you will be glad of the air conditioning units in hotels, villas and malls. Summer temperatures, during the night, rarely fall below the 70's with highs in the 90's during the day. Added to this is the humidity factor which makes it feel so much hotter. Most days, in summer, a breeze will start whipping up, usually mid afternoon, this is usually a sign to head for somewhere indoors as torrential rain will soon fall. The rain usually lasts around an hour and during this time you can see and hear some spectacular thunder and lightening storms. Remember that poncho at all times!

In the winter months, November through to May, you can expect warm, dry, weather with daytime temperatures reaching 70's - 80's

Hurricanes

Hurricane season is from July to approx October. If you do happen to be in Florida and there is a hurricane warning, please take heed and follow all instructions given by either your villa rental company or your hotel. I, personally, was caught up in Hurricane Frances and had to spend three days of our vacation in the garage of my villa with no power, no telephone, t.v., windows with bubble wrap taped all around them, no air conditioning (still swelteringly hot although a hurricane is wreaking havock outside) and worst of all no water to wash or flush toilets etc. Not the best way to spend a vacation!
If a hurricane warning is given it is best to head for the nearest supermarket straight away and stock up on essentials. The area does quickly go into panic mode and the shelves are soon cleared of anything worth buying. I would recommend you stock up on bubble wrap (very important if you don't want to be cut to shreds with glass shards from windows) lots of candles, canned food, baby equipment (nappies, baby food and a battery operated fan to keep baby cool) A good idea is to buy cards, dominoes etc. as well, as 3 days in a garage soon becomes tedious. Before Hurricane Frances a county wide alcohol ban went into operation, so maybe best to get in some beers or vodka.
Fill up any container at all you can find with water, as you will have no running water. Keep clean containers for drinking water, washing dishes, brushing teeth etc. but remember you can always fill up the kitchen bin with water for flushing the toilet.
