Orlando in Orange County is the sixth largest city in Florida and home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios.
Brief History Of Orlando
Some controversy surrounds the origins of the city name, with some historians granting the honour to Orlando Reeves who was, supposedly, killed in the area during a Seminole Indian war, however fact and fiction have become somewhat muddled over the years and it is thought that Orlando Reeves, a plantation and sugar mill owner, actually lived in Volusia County as opposed to Orange County but settlers to the area came across his name carved into a tree and assumed this was where he was laid to rest. The area became known amongst the settlers as Orlando's Grave and, through time, was later shortened to Orlando.
Most visitors to Orlando will stay in a hotel or motel on International Drive. I Drive can become very congested at peak times and driving or getting your car out of your hotel car park onto I Drive can be quite a challenge. For anyone not wishing to hire a car I would recommend they choose International Drive to stay as opposed to Kissimmee. I Drive is a much better base for the non driver as the hotels usually have a shuttle service to the parks and there are plenty shopping malls, bars, restaurants to suit every taste and a water park all within walking distance.
